I’ve never been into boy bands. I’ve pretty much always preferred female vocals, and too often the boy bands got into cheesy harmonies or even cheesier lyrics.
Last year, however, after seeing Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, I fell in love with Take That’s song that came at the end of the movie, Rule the World. When their best-of and then their new disk, came out, I check them out and discovered some pretty good music.
And just like Girls Aloud, Take That’s lyrics often hold some pretty decent Someday-busting lyrics. Take their song Shine for example.
Shine, by Take That
You, you’re such a big star to me
You’re everything I wanna be
But you’re stuck in a hole and I want you to get out
I don’t know what there is to see
But I know it’s time for you to leave
We’re all just pushing along
Trying to figure it out, out, out.All your anticipation pulls you down
When you can have it all, you can have it all.So come on, come on, get it on
Don’t know what you’re waiting for
Your time is coming don’t be late, hey hey
So come on
See the light on your face
Let it shine
Just let it shine
Let it shine.Stop being so hard on yourself
It’s not good for your health
I know that you can change
So clear your head and come round
You only have to open your eyes
You might just get a big surprise
And it may feel good and you might want to smile, smile, smile.Don’t you let your demons pull you down
‘Cause you can have it all, you can have it all.Hey let me know you
You’re all that matters to me
Hey let me show you
You’re all that matters to me.Hey let me love you
You’re all that matters to me
Hey so come on yeah
Shine all your light over me.
How many people do you know that this song could describe? You’re including yourself, right? Yeah, me too.
Homework (yes, that’s right, today I’m giving you homework, deal with it):

I’ll kick off the homework with my own answers…
My demons and anticipation are totally writing related. I get impatient and want the first draft to be perfect and then when it isn’t, I’m convinced I’m a crap writer (my demons are pretty common writerly demons) and feel like stopping.
How am I pulling myself out of the hole? I’ve started an online course by Lazette Gifford on the Foward Motion Writers site called The 2 Year Novel - a structured approach to novel writing that keeps me moving forward even when I don’t feel like doing anything.
One of my demons is urging me to get everything done.
Another is telling me all that I could miss important information and therefore working on goals that tend to get obsolete soon.

So what are you doing to pull yourself out of the hole your demons are putting you in?
I do it as I deal with my baby son: The more aggressive the ask for attention and fulfillment the more I refuse.

OMG, that rocks! It is so going to become my favourite site!
Okay. That song reminds me so much of Queen’s music that it isn’t funny.

Alex, I love Shine. Just love it.
In answer to your question, I was assaulted by my inner critic at the weekend - as I wrote in the post I did a number of things to get round it, including blogging about it. Once I can put it out there I find the problem gets a lot a lot smaller - or disappears.

I was thinking Wings but Queen works too. Same era…
@Joanna
I write through my anxieties sometimes too - it’s like once you’ve put them on paper they suddenly seem small and kind of silly.
