Getting Out of My Own Way
By Alex Fayle

Like many people, I often get in my own way. I don’t achieve the goals I’m aiming for because I don’t ask for help or because I talk too much about the goals and replace talking for action.

At the beginning of June 2007 I got a very practical lesson in asking for help while in 2008, I’d actually started learning to not talk quite as much.

Two Years Ago on Someday Syndrome

I was at my last room and board for work exchange in a small village in the Basque Country and in trying to show how capable I was, I only demonstrated how pride indeed does come before the fall.

Last Year on Someday Syndrome

While working on the precursor to my ebook, instead of talking about it, I actually just worked on it. I did, however, indulge in cryptic messages on the blog. ;)

    Another culprit is list-making. Endless lists & the time it takes to make them. Many times we know exactly what action must be taken & our memory is good enough to remember what’s on the to-do list. Instead of taking the action(s), we make more lists and then focus on something nonessential.

    There’s something very refreshing about simply starting.

    It’s really interesting to think about how often we get in our own ways…I definitely do this a lot and it’s something I need to be more conscious of.

    Yeah, it’s quite amazing that if we looked at our lives, we’d see how often we get in our own way. Makes me want to explore where in my life I’ve done this and stop doing it right away.

    Sometimes thinking in my head gets in my way, the overanalysis of situations, things I contributed to, how it could have been different. Its good to have some critical reflection, however then you have to move forward, learn and let it go!!
    Sometimes listening to others overanalysis of me also gets in my way, I am accountable for my actions and responsible for moving forward and manifesting positive energy! and sometimes have to say, thanks but no thanks!
    Reminded recently of my childhood when I came across an old school friend from primary school, he is a lecturer and motivational speaker, confident, strong and in a wheelchair.
    He reminded me that as a child I was always there for him.
    Good lesson that kindness is always remembered.
    and how do you want to be remembered?
    what a great journey.

    @Pamir
    That’s why I have a standard to-do list to which I might add something new occasionally. I know what needs to get done and the list just keeps me on track. If I don’t have it then yes, I write and rewrite millions of to-do lists.

    @Positively Present
    I think as long as you work at being “present” as you remind yourself every day of doing through your blog name then you shouldn’t have too much trouble remembering to get out of your way.

    @Srinivas
    That’s what I love about having a blog. I used to try a diary but it never worked. The blog acts as a diary which I can use to look back and pull out the lessons I might have missed at the time.

    @Sammi
    I’m such an overanalyzer! If something negative gets into my head and I can’t talk about it right away I spin it into the biggest drama! Fortunately I’ve learned to recognize it and have fun with my dramatic tendencies pushing the hyperbole to an extreme then talking about the issue with someone as soon as possible.

    I still burn things, but at least they’re my own things and that’s because I get distracted by my computer - not because of ego. ;)
