Purposefully Being Unproductive

With October being National Clock month I was torn about what song to choose for this month’s Pop Music Positivity post. I immediately thought of Culture Club’s Time (Clock of the Heart) but it’s not a very positive song.

Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time also came to mind, but didn’t fit with the theme. The song is about being supportive of people throughout their life and has nothing to do with productivity.

That got me thinking. Why do we always associate the clock and time with being productive? We divide our days into good and bad with leisure time and silliness all too often falling on the bad (i.e., unproductive) side of the line.

But as they say “all work and no play make Jack a dull boy” I decided this month’s Pop Music Positivity post will celebrate the silly, the fun and the totally unproductive.

Every once in a while we just need to let our hair down, dress up in fancy costume and have complete and utter fun. Back in the 80s, in cities across North America the film that this month’s song comes from encouraged people to do just that. People would dress up, memorize their lines and bring props to repertory movie houses and sing along, yell at the screen and throw things.

Pure, utter, unproductive silliness at its best.
